Iron Nest Mission 5: Iron Road - Solutions

Mission Summary & Rapid Solution TL;DR EXECUTION

Do not chase the moving train. Lead the train by targeting Railway Chokepoint Waypoint 3 (18.50 km / 142.0° / 4 charges / 55.5° elevation). Fire 18 seconds before train arrival.

  • ✓ Track armored train speed and project railway waypoint intercept time
  • ✓ Target fixed Chokepoint Waypoint 3 with AP ammunition
  • ✓ Eliminate both heavy armored gun emplacements
  • ✓ Coordinate War Horn signal with friendly ground assault

Worked example: Bearing, range, charge and elevation figures below come from a sample playthrough. Enemy spawns and your Iron Nest’s position vary each run — always measure on the map and follow the in-game ballistic calculator.

Mission Critical Strategy: Firing the Lead, Not the Train

Iron Road is the first mission with a target that will not sit still. Every objective before it was a fixed installation you could range once and forget. Mission 5 changes that rule: an armored supply train on a fixed rail line through Sector ECHO-05, where discipline is when you fire, not where.

The most common failure is following the train. Operators slew the turret to keep the locomotive centered and fire when it looks right. The turret has traverse latency, so the gun does not arrive at the commanded bearing instantly. And the shell takes roughly 18 seconds to cover 18.50 km, so a train aimed at “now” is a full lead-distance further down the rail when the shell lands. Chasing it misses.

The correct model is to stop treating the train as a moving target. The rail line is fixed and passes through a chokepoint — the bridge at Waypoint 3 — where the train is briefly committed to one predictable position. You do not lead it along its length; you lead it in time. Fire a shell laid on the immobile bridge track so the projectile arrives as the train does. The lead becomes a countdown you execute calmly while the target is still a kilometre away.

The game hands you that countdown. The teleprinter prints each waypoint as the train reaches it. When the train clears Waypoint 2, the ticker fires its trigger line and you begin an 18-second clock. The shell laid on the bridge at that instant lands as the locomotive arrives. A moving-target fight becomes a stationary target with an 18-second delay you merely count.

tlead=Δsvtraint_{\text{lead}} = \frac{\Delta s}{v_{\text{train}}}

The lead time is the distance the train must still travel to the bridge divided by its track speed. The bridge and train speed are fixed, so that distance resolves to a constant window — the 18-second figure below. You read a clock the mission gives you; the skill is pulling the lanyard on the count, not the sight.

Figure 5.1: Lead-time firing solution for the armored train in Mission 5. When the train triggers Waypoint 2, wait 18 seconds before firing at Bridge Waypoint 3.

The figure plots the geometry. Iron Nest sits at the lower-left origin; the dashed rail curves from Waypoint 1 through the Waypoint 2 trigger to the red killzone at Waypoint 3. The amber line targets the bridge, not the train — fired early, it arrives late. That is the trick.

Intercept Solution Table

Do not improvise the bridge solution. Only the fixed intercept point and the lead time matter, and they stay stable run to run because the bridge does not move. The values below come from the sample playthrough in the worked example; always confirm the bridge on the map and let the in-game calculator verify elevation before you commit the charge.

  • Intercept Point: Railway Bridge Chokepoint (Waypoint 3)
  • Range from Nest: 18.50 km
  • Bearing: 142.0°
  • Charges: 4 Charges
  • Elevation: 55.50° (worked example)
  • Lead Time: Fire 18 seconds after train clears Waypoint 2.

The bridge is the only place the whole train is forced into a single narrow lane. Shells fired elsewhere chase a target that has already left. Fire on the bridge, on the clock, and the train derails into your impact point. The 18-second lead is a hard rule — fire off the count and the impact slides off the bridge.

Step-by-Step Operator Routine

Phase 1: Pre-Engagement Plot (Timer: Stopped)

  1. Read the teleprinter dispatch and trace the full rail line from Waypoint 1 to Waypoint 3 on your map.
  2. Mark the bridge chokepoint at Waypoint 3 as the sole intercept point. Nothing else on the track is worth a shell.
  3. Confirm the bridge range and bearing from your own position: expect roughly 18.50 km at 142.0°, but measure — never trust the sample numbers blindly.
  4. Requisition 2 AP shells and 2 H shells, plus 12 powder charge bags for the four-charge loads.
  5. Pre-load the Left Gun with 1 AP + 4 charge bags and set elevation to 55.50°. You will not fire until the clock starts.

Phase 2: Run the Lead (The Only Shot That Matters)

  1. Watch the teleprinter. The instant the train clears Waypoint 2, start an 18-second count in your head or on a watch.
  2. Traverse the turret to 142.0° and confirm the bridge is centered — not the train, the bridge.
  3. At the 18-second mark, pull the lanyard. The shell lands on the bridge as the locomotive arrives.
  4. Confirm the derail via teleprinter. If it still moves, you fired off the clock — re-run the count and fire on the exact mark.

Phase 3: Clear the Emplacements (After the Derail)

  1. With the train wrecked across the bridge, the two heavy AP emplacements lose their cover and become stationary targets.
  2. Load H shells and engage each emplacement using the in-game calculator; their positions are fixed and printed on your map.
  3. Coordinate the War Horn signal with the friendly ground assault only after both emplacements are silent.
  4. Stand down when high command confirms the sector is clear.

[!IMPORTANT] Operator Rule: Never track the train with the turret. Lay the bridge, run the 18-second clock, and fire on the count. The train’s motion is solved by time, not by traverse — chasing it with the gun is the miss.

Q1How do I lead the moving train?

Calculate the shell flight time (approx 18s at 18.5 km). Watch the train pass Waypoint 2 on the teleprinter ticker, wait the delta interval, and fire at the fixed Waypoint 3 track.
